African American Heritage Week

Special School District Community Based Vocation Instruction Students  

Students researched and found deaf or hard of hearing African Americans who made significant contributions to society and created a Power Point to elaborate on each person.

Vet Student OTJ Experience

SNIP Alliance Outreach

Collaborative effort between:

SNIP Alliance and Mobile Veterinary Services

Vet students were given the opportunity to work alongside the vet during a high volume (30 + animals per day) spay neuter clinic.  Opportunities to do this type of work do not exist in our area.

SNIP Alliance and Riverbend Growth Association - Young Adults Committee

Students spent a morning building houses for stray cats from styrofoam coolers, storage totes, and straw.

SNIP Alliance and Tractor Supply Company - Alton, IL.

Pet owners brought their pet in for a picture with Santa Paws for a suggested donation (I'm Santa Paws!). Money raised was used to fund the Cat House Project (seen above).

Outreach to Faith Countryside Homes in Highland, Illinois.

Trouble is registered through Pet Partners as a therapy animal.  The residents all respond positively to their interaction with him each time he visits.

Panel Discussion - "What Does the Deaf Community Want?"

Community Event - Panel Discussion

Collaborative effort between:

DEAF, Inc. St. Louis Community College, and the Deaf Community

 

Student interpreters were paired with professional interpreters to give them hands-on experience working in this type of setting.  This type of opportunity is very difficult to get as a student interpreter.

SNIP Alliance and the Riverbender.com Community Center in Alton, Il.

 

Students played Jeopardy to learn more about pet care and the importance of commitment before getting an animal.  

Deaf Awareness Week

Awareness Event

Collaborative effort between:

Deaf Services and multiple offices on campus.

The importance of celebrating Deaf Awareness Week is to bring attention to a marginalized group of people so that others can begin to empathize with the challenges they face.

Missouri History Museum

DEAF, Inc.

Creating Accessible Exhibits

Collaborative effort between:

DEAF, Inc. and the Missouri History Museum

Through our efforts, we made the audio portion of an exhibit accessible.  We created QR codes and linked them to an interpreted version of what was heard on headsets.
